Electro chlorination is one method of chlorination using electrolysis process. In this method brine solution is converted into hypochlorite solutions. When direct current is passed through the solution containing electrodes, electrolysis of Sodium Chloride takes place. The chemical reaction could be formulated as below:
NaCl + H2O + Energy = NaOCl + H2
It chlorinates drinking water without producing environmental toxins. Unlike other chlorination techniques, electro chlorination generates no sludge or by-products other than hydrogen which must be managed safely. It is safer for the operators of the chlorinators as there is no handling of chlorine gas, which is highly toxic and corrosive. A risk assessment is required as hydrogen released is flammable & explosive.
