Electro chlorination is the process of producing sodium hypochlorite on site using salt water. Through electrolysis, the process of Electro chlorination is a direct current electrical supply which provides the energy to discharge the ions from the electrolyte (salt solution). The electrochemical reaction results in free chlorine being generated at the anode, while hydrogen and sodium hydroxides are released at the cathode. The chlorine and sodium hydroxide react with each other further to form sodium hypochlorite, a salt water disinfectant.

The electro chlorination is the process of applying an electrical current to water to produce the sodium hypochlorite. The sodium hypochlorite solution contains between 0.7% - 1% chlorine. The chlorine or sodium hypochlorite is generally used as a water disinfection with low risk of handling hazardous chemicals. Electro chlorination is the next step in the evolution of this process. It chlorinates drinking water without producing environmental toxins. It is safer for the operators of the chlorinators as there is no handling of chlorine gas, which is highly toxic and corrosive. A risk assessment is required as hydrogen released is flammable & explosive.
